Carl Jung was the founder of the school of analytical psychology.
Jung used the term shadow to refer to aspects of the human personality that remain hidden from the conscious self and are repressed , but they are still part of the human psyche.
In other words the shadow includes desires, thoughts, and feeling that for reasons such as being morally or socially unacceptable, we have brought out of our unconscious psyche and cast into the darkness of our unconscious.
Jung believes that all human have a shadow within themselves, which is their twin , that carry with them and the more this shadow affect the individual’s conscious life, the darker , heavier , and denser it will be.
he says that humans are not as good-nature and inherently in harmony with the moral values of society (and should be taken into account that moral values of each society are accordance with its culture , therefore these values of each society differ from another) as they think.
Each of us has undesirable and possibly evil aspects in our psyche. But instead of suppressing these personality traits , we should face them honestly.
The shadow can be any part of a person’s personality traits , both positive and negative , that has been banished to the realm of the shadow.
For example , a person who lacks the courage to express their opinions because , in childhood and even adulthood , their family, parent, and those around them considered their demands selfish and their expressing their opinions as a sign of a lack of knowledge and insolent and told them that they were talking nonsense .
James Hollis a contemporary Jungian psychologist , believes that we should not consider the shadow to be synonymous with evil . The shadow is repressed in a life event, so it can be full of potential possibilities and forces .
From Jung’s perspective if negative human traits are not identified and suppressed , they become for more destructive, so shadows are actually the invisible half of the human personality. Therefore Jungian psychology , each new generation inherits the unresolved shadows of the previous generation. Therefore , the problems of the shadow of the previous generation manifest themselves again with greater intensity (Due to technology the problems of societies are also becoming more complex) in the next generation and this transmission of shadows to future generations will continue in succession (like the cycle of rebirth in Buddhism and Hinduism) unless just one person becomes aware of his shadow and controls it so that this vicious cycle is broken
